The Resident Evil series has swept the world up in its international tale of disease, infections, and unnecessary singing characters. The series has been called one of the most important in gaming history, and the name is still a major franchise for Capcom. So out of anticipation of RE5's DLC release next month, we present…5 Facts on Resident Evil.

1. The Name of Horror
It's no secret that the Resident Evil series goes by a noticeably different moniker in the Far East (Biohazard). However, the reason isn't mysterious at all. It comes down to the fact that "Biohazard" would be very, VERY difficult to have trademarked, making the act of creating a brand infeasible. Capcom had an internal contest, and Resident Evil, as we know it, was born.

2. Resident Evil __ ?
So, Resident evil 2 has an abandoned older brother of a game nicknamed 1.5 that had a mostly different cast. That's common knowledge to any hardcore Resident Evil fan. But did you know that Resident Evil 4 has several? This game has a fabled (and troubled) development history. In fact, the original design of the game was taken and remade into what we know lovingly know as Devil May Cry. Other versions include a floating fortress, Leon going insane, Leon becoming "infected" and getting magical powers, and a hook-wielding man who haunted Leon during his aforementioned insanity (the hook in the logo of 4 is possibly the only remnants of this). Also, there was once a seductive female lead opposite Leon, but she was cut before ever being shown to the public. View the original trailer here.

3. Multiple Personality Disorder
The original Resident Evil had been ported to pretty much everything at this point, but the best port (read: not "REmake") was arguably on the Sega Saturn because of the amount of exclusive content. You got new enemies like Zombie Wesker, New outfits, and even a battle mode! Too bad I was the only kid on my block to have a Saturn.

4. Herbal Remedies

Herbs save lives. That is the de facto standard of healthcare in Resident Evil, where amateur knowledge of the indigenous botanical life can cure infections, animal mauling, and the occasional rocket propelled grenade from Nemesis. The varied combinations of red, green, and blue herbs can cure just about anything. In Resident Evil 0, though, there was another. Messing around with a Gameshark or an Action Replay on the Gamecube version reveals that there was actually a pink herb that was never fully realized. Who knows? Maybe it would have allowed us to see through walls or something?

5. Who's line is it anyway?
Resident Evil 1 is notorious for its asinine voice acting and ludicrous script. Did you know that the Japanese version originally had different voice actors (speaking in their native language, of course), but it was all rejected because RE creator Shinji Mikami found the quality unacceptable. Way to go there, guy.
