Mass Effect has swept the hearts and imaginations of countless gamers all over the world. With an epic sequel less than a week away, we figured it would be cool to go back and take a look at the makings and magic that surrounds the original release. So sit back, relax, and learn a thing or two about the origins of a game you're probably replaying at this very moment.

1. Director's cut
Mass Effect went through numerous changes in its development. Initially, players were actually able to take control of each of their teammates, as opposed to just giving them orders. This can be seen in the 2006 walkthrough demo, where Project Lead Casey Hudson takes control of a plain-faced Garrus on Therum. This mission he partakes in is also something that was cut.

2. Familiar voices
The female Shepard is voiced by none other than Jennifer Hale, who has quite the resume behind her. Among the list of voices are Samus Aran (Metroid), Naomi Hunter (Metal Gear Solid), and more recently, Ophelia (Brutal Legend). Quite the All-Star eh?

3. The stick up
The Flux bar on the citadel originally had a Salarian as a bartender, who you had to intimidate to get answers during a mission. This scene was shown off in numerous preview videos to demonstrate the dialogue aspect of the game, and was replaced by a completely different side quest with new characters.

4. Encore
Nassana, an Asari who gave you a faux side quest to "save" her sister in the original Mass Effect returns in the sequel. What's interesting to note here is that Nassana originally had more to do with the main Reaper story of the first game, but was later repurposed to serve only as a side quest. Guess the developers just loved her too much to let her go.

5. Mooo
On the planet Ontoram, in the Newton system of the Kepler Verge, there are a herd of space cows. One of them, named shifty looking cow, will steal your credits and stalk you. Be careful..You can shoot this swindler dead with one shot. But he'll be back. And everything he took cannot be recovered.
